Ben Stiller Turned Down Directing Good Will Hunting

Ben Stiller Turned Down Directing Good Will Hunting

Transcription

Ben Stiller: By the way, I have passed on things that then I regretted for sure.

— Like what?

Ben Stiller: Good Will Hunting.

— Not you directing Good Will Hunting?! Are you serious?! Good Will Hunting — one of the best movies ever made! Right?

Ben Stiller: I haven't watched it for a while.

— The boys handed you the script? They were young guys.

Ben Stiller: I don't even know if they knew I got it. I got sent it by my agent at the time. The first turn-off was that these two guys were attached to act in it. I was like, "What? Come on... who are they?" I cast to my own projects.

— I'm Ben Stiller! Who are these guys?

Ben Stiller: Or I attach myself to things I've written and then I don’t want anybody else attached. I missed the boat.

— And that night, when the Academy Awards were on... and those two guys were up there cheering, screaming... You can never really know, right?

Ben Stiller: No, you never know. And sometimes it's just where you're at in your life at that moment. And you go: "Okay, that was good... but I just — I really couldn't at that time."
